Furnace Buying Guide

Posted by Brennan Heating and A/C No Comments »

Purchasing a new furnace can be confusing. It’s a good idea to consult with a local HVAC contractor to help you determine the best HVAC system for your home. HVAC simply stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning and usually refers to the heating and air conditioning system or unit in your home, such a furnace and a central air system. Here you will learn about some of the essential components of a furnace to help guide you through the purchase of your new furnace. You will also need to establish the fuel source in your home. You will have to know if you have: A natural gas line, Propane tank, Oil tank, or only electricity.

Terms To Know:

BTU: BTU stands for British Thermal Unit and is a unit of energy by which the gas input of a furnace is measured. In other words, BTU’s are how the size of the furnace is expressed. Common sizes are 40,000, 60,000, 80,000, 100,000, and 120,000 BTU/hr. Larger homes will need a unit with a larger BTU level. A BTU number alone does not mean much. It’s only when it is combined with the AFUE that it makes sense.

AFUE: AFUE stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency and this is the number that you will ant to pay specific attention to as it measure how energy efficient the furnace is. This is measured by a percentage and the higher the AFUE level, the more efficient the furnace is. The golden AFUE rule is that a furnace must have a rating of 80% to be considered efficient. But, keep in mind that you should highly consider purchasing a furnace with a 90% or higher rating.

Brand: Brand really does matter when it comes to purchasing a furnace/HVAC system. Good brands with a good reputation will offer warranties. There have been many furnace companies who have been around for decades; it may be worth it to invest in one of their products.

HVAC Contractor: Make sure you hire a professional, reliable contractor to install your furnace/HVAC system. A high quality system won’t work well if it isn’t installed properly.

Choose Gas Fireplace Inserts to Warm Up Your Home

Posted by Brennan Heating and A/C 2 Comments »

Imagine at the touch of a button a soothing fire to keep you warm and add atmosphere to any room in your home. Gas fireplace inserts provide these comforts and much more. They will provide heat to your space that you and your family spend the most time in. These inserts convert a drafty old fireplace into an efficient heat source for your home.

A family room is the ideal space for gas fireplace inserts. They come in many different styles to match any décor that you may have in your home. From a traditional fire place with a mantel to a modern design that is sleek and contemporary you will find gas fireplace inserts to be a welcome addition to any room. They can be installed within existing traditional fire places or can come direct to you from the factory.

Gas fireplace inserts provide both radiant and convection heat to your space. They can be operated either manually or remotely using a wall thermostat and a remote thermostat transmitter. The flame characteristics of gas fireplace inserts are that they are very consistent. They are usually designed to give the look of partially burned logs or coals made out of ceramic. Gas flames rise up through the logs to replicate the look and feel of a wood fire. The fire can be adjusted to meet the desired heat output or visual mood you wish to achieve.

Gas fireplace inserts require annual maintenance by qualified technicians. Your local dealer will be able to assist you in this task. Other then cleaning the glass as needed and changing the batteries in the remote you will be able to enjoy a warm fire with little maintenance!

Gas fireplace inserts will provide many years of comfort and warmth to your home. They can be used everyday, not just for special occasions. They will enable you to turn down the thermostat on your furnace and conserve energy by only heating the space that is being used by you and your family.

Natural Gas Conversion-Now is the time!

Posted by Brennan Heating and A/C No Comments »

If you find that you wear a coat and gloves around your house during the winter because you can’t afford to turn your thermostat above fifty-eight degrees, it may be time to think about a natural gas unit conversion. If the price of oil is affecting your quality of life to the point where you are bundled up in sweaters and blankets inside your house, it is time to invest in a heating system that will allow you to live comfortably in your home.

Since it doesn’t appear that the price of gas is going down anytime soon, it is probably time to bite the bullet and look into converting your oil heating unit to a natural gas unit. Assuming that you have a gas line in your neighborhood, the cost of converting can range from $3,000-$7,000. This may sound like a lot to put out at first, but in the long term, your reduced heating bill will make up for the initial outlay. The cost of the conversion will depend on factors like the size of your house, what type of furnace you buy, and how busy the contractor is at the time. Be sure to get quotes from several contractors before selecting one. Another factor that should influence your decision to covert to natural gas is the age of your current heating system. If your system is older, you will have to buy a new one in a few years anyway, so it is a good time to go ahead and convert to natural gas.

What no one can predict is the price of natural gas. If natural gas surpasses oil in cost, then it would no longer be beneficial to convert. Fortunately, long term projections show that natural gas is going to cost less than oil. Natural gas unit conversions offer relief to homeowners who have become bogged down by the cost of heating their homes with oil.

The Ratings Game, First Pick a good HVAC Contractor

Posted by Brennan Heating and A/C No Comments »

One of the things that you need to understand when you buy a furnace is that the most important thing to look at is the furnace ratings, because these are the things which will enable you to make a decision as to whether or not the furnace is powerful enough to heat your home. This article will look at a few things that you need to understand before making a decision.

The first thing to understand is that you need to look closely at the size of your house or apartment, because obviously the larger the house the bigger the furnace will need to be. You will need a furnace that has a very high AFUE rating, because this will show the heat output of the furnace and the size of the house that it can heat. This is the most important step before you go further.

The next thing to look at is whether you need the furnace to heat the hot water system as well a supply general heating. If you want to heat hot water you obviously need to have a more powerful furnace and one which you will use just for general everyday heating. A good HVAC contractor will usually be able to tell you exactly what you will need to choose in order to do this.

Finally you need to look at the cost, but not only the cost of the furnace itself but also the running costs. It is always a mistake to try to buy something that is cheap in this department, because a cheap furnace may end up costing you more money in maintenance of the years that you will actually save on the purchase.

Keep these points in mind when you are looking at furnace ratings and you will not go far wrong when you come to make a purchase.

About Lennox by Brennan Heating & Air Conditioning

Posted by Brennan Heating and A/C No Comments »

Brennan Heating offers heat pumps, fan coils and controls (thermostats) from several of the world’s leading manufacturers.

The name Lennox is synonymous with heating and cooling equipment. Lennox heat pumps are one of their most popular products. The company sells units to residential and commercial customers. Besides heat pumps, they also sell furnaces and air conditioners. When people look for economical ways to heat and cool their home they want a name they can rely on. There are quite a few reliable companies out there. If you do your homework and you should be able to find a product that works as described.

We will focus this article on Lennox heat pumps and the Lennox Company. Back in 1895, Dave Lennox developed his first furnace. Only nine years later, he sold the company and it was re-named the Lennox Furnace Company. It stayed that way until 1955, when it was re-named to Lennox Industries. They have sales offices all across North America.

Lennox heat pumps provide homeowners with a cost saving method in which to heat or cool the home. The pump transfers heat between the inside and the outside of your home. This allows it to heat the home in the winter and cool it in the summer. An example of one of their newer units is the PowerSaverT heat pump. It operates at a low speed when the weather is mild and when the temperatures are extreme it will operate at a higher speed. The two-speed efficiency will improve the air filtration and protects the machines compressor from wearing out due to the frequent stopping and starting.

Many experts believe that a geothermal heat pump is the best means in which to heat or cool your home. This type of pump requires only a small amount of electricity to run. This, it is good for the environment because it reduces the reliance on electrical power plants. They are also considered the quietest pump on the market.

In conclusion, when choosing a efficient and cost effective way to heat or cool your home, why not look into Lennox heat pumps. The more information you have about different methods of heating and cooling your home, the more informed you would be to make a good sound decision.

Radiant Floor Heating by Brennan Heating

Benefits of Radiant Heating:

Radiant Floor Heating

Radiant Floor Heating

How many times have you walked barefoot on your tile floor in the middle of winter and said “Man that’s cold!”? A few times I’m sure. Well, with radiant floor heating you can say goodbye to cold feet on your tile floor. Radiant floor heating goes further than just keeping the floors in your home warm. It also helps in warming the entire house.

How does radiant floor heating actually work anyway? Basically, it’s a system of hot water tubes that are connected to the sub-floor. Thermal flooring is then installed over the top of these tubes which will take the heat and transfer it out into the room.  It is kind of like how an old hot water radiator worked when you were in school. At least those of us who are old enough to remember those radiators in the classrooms.

The heating source can be from any number of hot water resources. Because of how flexible the flooring system is, it makes for many different options.  What I really like about radiant heat flooring is that it is so quiet. You have no idea the system is even running. I love it in the bathroom!  It is also a very energy efficient heating system and dramatically reduces the need to run the furnace. If you are searching for a way of keeping your floors warm in the winter and save money on your heating bills, consider taking a serious look at radiant heat flooring.  by Terry Edwards

Compliments to Brennan Heating and Air Conditioning from West Seattle

Posted by Brennan Heating and A/C No Comments »

The West Seattle Blog is ‘THE’ blog for all things regarding West Seattle. I visit the site often since I live nearby.  I came across a really nice compliment and testimonial from a West Seattle resident that needed heating service and called Brennan Heating. Thank you to WJG for taking the time to share your experience.

“My wife and I came downstairs this morning to find that the furnace had shut off and the thermostat was blank (no power). I assumed that the thermostats had gone bad and needed to be replaced. I started calling around to purchase one. I called and spoke with Murphy at Brennan Heating and Air Conditioning. He suggested that I check the condensate line for the furnace. (The condensate or water is the result of combustion and may be set up to drain on the exterior of your home). Murphy explained that the condensate would freeze in the line and the backup of condensate/water would activate a sensor or switch which prevented the furnace from entering the heating cycle. After checking the line at his suggestion and spending 30 seconds with my wife’s hair dryer blowing warm air into the line, my furnace was back up and running. Again, while I hope no one else is having this problem, Murphy did say that a large number of their service calls during this cold snap could be attributed to this. He probably saved us the money I would have spent on the thermostat and a service call.”

For heating service, repair or maintence and any other heating needs you may have in West Seattle, give Brennan a call today.  They will be happy to help!
