Energy Efficiency Action Award honors leading local businesses.
BELLEVUE, Wash. – Puget Sound Energy (PSE) last week honored three local contractors with the utility’s first-ever Energy Efficiency Action Award. The award was given to the top professionals who install the heating, cooling and water heating equipment supported by PSE residential rebate and incentive programs. “Energy efficiency is too big a job for PSE to do it alone,” said Cal Shirley, vice president of Energy Efficiency Services for PSE. “Our local contractors are a key part of helping this region conserve natural gas and electricity, and they offer a tremendous resource for both the utility and our residential customers.” Recipients of the Energy Efficiency Action Award are:

Washington Energy Services, Seattle
Each earned the distinction for their outstanding performance in helping residential customers save natural gas and electricity. The three companies completed the highest number of residential high-efficiency equipment installations in PSE’s service territory. Together, the three contractors installed 25 percent of the total rebates under the high-efficiency furnace, water heater and heat pump residential retrofit programs. In all, the award-winning contractors performed nearly 2,000 retrofits in 2007. Energy efficiency is a vital part of the utility’s strategy to meet increasing energy
demands in the growing Puget Sound region and protect the environment, with the target of displacing 53.3 average megawatts (aMW) of generation and 5.3 million therms of natural gas over the next two years. Using PSE incentives, PSE customers during the past five years have more than doubled their annual electricity savings and more than tripled their natural gas savings.
Since 1979, PSE programs have reduced customers’ ongoing power usage by about 222 a MW – enough to serve the electricity needs of nearly 170,000 homes. PSE’s current plans would save enough energy over the next 20 years to supply electricity to all the residences in Seattle, Bellevue, Bellingharn, and Olympia combined, and negate the need for building two additional mid-sized, 250-MW power plants. “Years ago, at least 25, I had dealings with Brennan heating and Air, moving away from the north Seattle area, I settled in Redmond, in a home equipped with air conditioning, recently I had trouble with the 25 year old unit, (not a Lennox) I called a firm that represented the units, was told I needed this and that, should replace the unit, they sent a salesperson to my door, gave me a estimate. My name is David. My wife, Michelle, and I just had our old oil furnaces replaced with gas furnaces. We were thinking of having the work done by Brennan Heating because I’d read and heard good things about your company from a variety of sources.
Your appraiser (Rodney) came out and meticulously went through the house, gave us options, and a reasonable bid. I was very impressed by his knowledge as well as his trustworthiness. He is an excellent representative for your firm. The job started promptly on the date we were told it would start. The two gentleman who were primarily responsible for doing the main body of work, Scott and his trainee, Jerrod, were unfailingly polite, hardworking, and professional. I can see why you chose Scott to be a trainer for someone who is just learning the myriad of things one has to learn in this job where a multi-faceted skillset and a creative, problem-solving mind are absolutely required.
The job proceded along like clockwork. The air-duct cleaners arrived at the appropriate time and they were quick, but thorough, and very efficient. The furnace in our basement was like something out of a horror movie. Monstrous. Diabolical. And not ready bow out of the picture without putting up one hell of a final battle. Scott called in the demolition team. Julius (I believe that’s his name, but I may be thinking of the renowned fruit smoothie drink made popular during Seattle’s World’s Fair in 1962) and the other gentleman (whose name now escapes me) were equal to the challenge. They stayed into the evening (after first requesting permission) and didn’t leave until the beast was slain. I don’t know how they did it so quickly, but, like everyone I’ve met from Brennan Heating, they not only delivered — they exceeded our expectations.
Scott and Jerrod have just left my home within the past 30 minutes. Before leaving, Scott demonstrated the furnaces in operation, walked me through the house showing me exactly what was done and patiently answered all of my questions. They left our house cleaner than they found it.

Heat pumps offer one of the most energy-efficient ways to provide heating and cooling in many applications, as they can use renewable heat sources in our surroundings. Even at temperatures we consider to be cold-air, ground and water contain useful heat that’s continuously replenished by the sun. By applying a little more energy, a heat pump can raise the temperature of this heat energy to the level needed. A heat pump looks just like an air conditioner, but it does double duty, acting as a heater in the winter and an air conditioner in the summer.
Heat pumps are rated in SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) and HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor). SEER and HSPF ratings are like miles per gallon rating of automobiles. Higher SEER and HSPF ratings mean greater energy savings.
