Energy Savings Calculator-How efficient thinking adds up to big savings

May 30th, 2010
Posted by Brennan Heating and A/C Click Here To Comment »

Heating and cooling can account for more than half of your home’s total utility bill.* So when looking for ways to cut your energy costs, be sure to think about a high-efficiency system. How do you know if a heating or cooling system is efficient? Take a look at the yellow-and-black EnergyGuide label, which displays efficiency ratings for the product.

To see how efficiency ratings impact your annual energy costs, use the Energy Calculator below.

lennox_savings_calculator

For U.S. and Canadian Residents

Instructions

1. Click on the “Heating” or “Cooling” arrow.
2. Use the drop-down menu next to the arrows to select the area where you live. This helps determine fuel and electricity rates, which vary by region.(Canadian provinces are listed at the bottom of the menu.)
3. Click on a number on the blue screen to select an AFUE or SEER rating. The efficiency rating you select will be compared to a base heating or cooling system.**

Potential dollar savings are shown at the top-right portion of the screen, and the percent of annual savings is displayed at left.

Heating Efficiency

Furnaces are rated by the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) ratio, which is the percent of heat produced for every dollar of fuel consumed. AFUE works a lot like the miles-per-gallon rating on your car—the higher the rating, the lower your fuel costs.

Cooling Efficiency

The measure for the efficiency of air conditioners and heat pumps is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), which compares cooling output to electrical consumption over a range of temperatures. The higher the SEER, the less the unit will cost to operate.

*Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Network, U.S. Department of Energy

**Air conditioner calculations are based on every $100 spent to cool a home using a 3-ton, 13-SEER unit. The criteria base for furnaces is a 60% AFUE unit, with a 50,000-Btuh heating load. Fuel rates and heating hours are factored into the calculation upon selection of a state or region. If a state is not selected, the calculator defaults to the US national average for fuel and electricity consumption. Actual costs and savings will vary depending on weather conditions, usage, location and local utility rates. This information is intended as an example for comparison purposes only.

Energy Star Central Air Conditioners can cut costs by 30%

August 5th, 2009
Posted by Brennan Heating and A/C Click Here To Comment »

Heating and cooling costs the average homeowner about $1,000 a year — nearly half the home’s total energy bill. If your central air conditioning unit is more than 12 years old, replacing it with an ENERGY STAR qualified model could cut your cooling costs by 30 percent. Earning the ENERGY STAR means products meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy.

  • ENERGY STAR qualified central air conditioners have a higher seasonal efficiency rating (SEER) than standard models, which makes them about 14% more efficient than standard models.

Remember, saving energy prevents pollution. By choosing ENERGY STAR and taking steps to optimize the performance of your cooling equipment, you are helping to prevent global warming and promoting cleaner air while enhancing the comfort of your home.

Four most common air conditioning problems

June 20th, 2009
Posted by Brennan Heating and A/C Click Here To Comment »

Air conditioners often fail at the worst possible times. When it is extremely hot, you don’t want your air conditioner to suddenly stop working. But if it does, there are some simple steps you can take to try to fix the problem yourself. Below is a list of the 4 most common air conditioning problems encountered, with some advice on how to fix them yourself.

1. Check The Controller – If the controller has been incorrectly used, the air conditioner will not function. HVAC systems have different settings for cooling and heating, and your air conditioner will not function if the wrong setting is used. If you are still struggling, try looking in your operation manual or ask the contractor who sold you the system for advice. If still no luck, have a look on the internet for some handy tips.

2. Clean The Filters – So many air conditioners struggle because the owners do not clean the filters. Cleaning the filter is ongoing maintenance that you should be performing at least once every few months. Cleaning your air conditioners filters can often fix a problem straight away.

3. Examine The Compressor – If your compressor fails your whole air conditioning system will fail. Check around the compressor for any signs of damage or wear and tare. Listen to the compressor for any irregular noises. Look around the compressor for ice build up as well. If you notice any of these things, it may be a sign of a more serious problem and you should call in an air conditioning contractor to inspect the system.

4. Reset The Power – Just like computers, a simple reset can often fix a hvac system. All you need to do is go to the meter box and turn the unit off. If fitted, there may also be an isolator switch at the compressor you can also turn off. Turn both these switches off for a few minutes before turning back on. It is a simple thing to try but it works quite a lot of the time.

If you have tried all of these points, hopefully you have had some success and your air conditioner is now working. If not, it is time to call in the air conditioning contractor.

Brennan offers air conditioners from all of the top manufacturers. To be the leader in the industry, we understand that every customer and application is unique, and we must have a wide array of options to completely satisfy every customer.

Saving on Your Air Conditioning Costs This Summer

June 20th, 2009
Posted by Brennan Heating and A/C Click Here To Comment »

Air conditioning costs, or A/C costs, tend to make up a rather large portion of energy bills during the warmer months. Since many air conditioners, whether they are portable window units or central air units, also double as dehumidifiers, the more humid it is the harder they will typically work.

That said the main goal of any homeowner using energy is to reduce the amount used on air conditioning costs. This has a direct effect on your summer energy bills.

Here are a few tips for saving on air conditioning costs this summer.

  • Clean the A/C filter. A dirty filter restricts air flow through the unit, greatly reducing its efficiency.
  • Take the time to set the thermostat. When you plug in the unit, make sure you set the thermostat to the correct temperature. Usually, a temperature of 74-78 is recommended for most areas. After you set the temperature, don’t mess with it.
  • Make sure the air flow into the unit and out of the unit is unrestricted. Move furniture if necessary. For central air units, this means keeping the registers and vents free and clear. For window units, make sure curtains don’t restrict air flow.
  • Try to keep the unit shielded from the sun. For central air units, this may mean placing a shelter over it (make sure it is well ventilated!) Unfortunately, for window units there isn’t much you can do here – although you may choose a different window in the same room that has more shade.
  • Draw the shades on the sunny side of the house. This prevents the heat from the sun from warming up the room.
  • Use ceiling fans. They circulate the cooled air efficiently and at a low energy cost.
  • Avoid using heat generating appliances during the warmest parts of the day. Dishwashers and ovens are notorious for the heat they generate when operating. Computers also generate a surprising amount of heat.

Our customers find there are many advantages to choosing Brennan Heating as their heating and cooling contractor. Brennan recently won Puget Sound Energy’s Contractor Referral Service Platinum Award for sales, service and customer satisfaction for the 5th time. That means we’re ranked #1 out of the top 40 companies in the industry. See the Awards page to find out why.

Looking for environmentally Friendly Air Conditioning, call Brennan Heating & A/C

With the serious problems affecting our environment today, many people are wondering how they can control the temperature of their indoor environments without continuing to deplete the natural environment. Air conditioners have long been a source of environmental pollution with the prolonged use of damaging artificial refrigerants that wreak havoc on our delicate atmosphere. Now that ‘green’ building has become so popular, the heating and cooling industry has begun to offer an array of widely available, environmentally friendly air conditioners for both residential and commercial use. By replacing the old-fashioned cooling systems of yesterday with the innovative air conditioning and air cleaning systems of today, we can substantially reduce the amount of damage done by our desire for indoor climate control.

Air conditioning products cool the indoor environment to a comfortable temperature in hot weather, providing an enjoyable and temperate climate in which to function. Appliance efficiency is one of the biggest factors to consider today, and the total efficiency of an air conditioning unit is indicated by the SEER rating, which indicates the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This rating is mandated by the government, can range between 10 and 17, and the higher the number, the more efficient the air conditioner. Many well known and respected heating and cooling companies offer high-efficiency air conditioning models for the public consumer. Choose a manufacturer that you trust and check out the range of SEER ratings on their available air conditioning units.

While a highly efficient air conditioner may mean more cost up front, a consumer will save even more in the long term with reduced monthly energy costs. In addition to air conditioners with a high SEER rating that are still powered by the local electric company, there are other alternatives, such as solar powered air conditioners and even newer technologies are still in the works and being developed and tested everyday using a wide array of environmentally friendly, natural and non toxic materials.

Another way to keep the immediate environment friendly is through the use of air cleaners and purifiers, which remove toxic gases, allergens and harmful molds and bacteria from the air by implementing powerful filters and air exchange systems to reduce negative effects on the body and the surrounding physical environment. Many of these air cleaners incorporate natural materials, such as organic cotton filters, into their construction while eliminating harmful dyes and chemicals. There are some very unconventional, highly efficient and completely environmentally friendly air cleaners and purifiers available today, some that even require no conventional electricity to work!

The wide availability of environmentally friendly air conditioning and air cleaning products today is truly astounding and is expanding all the time. Information on the many different and earth friendly products available can be found everywhere, and soon, the damaging technology of early climate control units will be a thing of the past.

Brennan Air Conditioning installations provide high quality central air for properties of any size in greater Seattle. Reliable, experienced, fully trained and qualified – our central air technicians will get you cool again in no time!

Brennan offers air conditioners from all of the top manufacturers.

To be the leader in the industry, we understand that every customer and application is unique, and we must have a wide array of options to completely satisfy every customer.

Environmentally Responsible

Most air conditioners and heat pumps sold around the world use a refrigerant called Freon R-22. Emissions of R-22 are considered by some experts to be a significant factor in depleting the ozone layer that protects animals and people from harmful rays from the sun.

Consumers now have the choice to ask for an air conditioner or heat pump that uses a more efficient and environmentally friendlier refrigerant such as R-410A. As R-22 is replaced with safer refrigerants, the cost of maintaining equipment using R-22 may increase dramatically. That’s why Brennan offers several environmentally friendly air conditioning systems so that you can avoid the rising costs associated with R-22. We’ll analyze your home comfort needs and recommend the system that makes sense for you.

The Best Choice Now and For the Future

Puron is the environmentally sound refrigerant recommended by the EPA to replace Freon®-22.

Due to environmental issues involving the earth’s ozone layer, governments worldwide have chosen to phase out production of refrigerants such as Freon®-22 used in most of today’s home cooling products.

As Freon®-22 is replaced with Puron, the cost of maintaining equipment using Freon®-22 may increase dramatically. That’s why Brennan offers several Puron air conditioning systems so that you can avoid the rising costs associated with Freon®-22.

We’ll analyze your home comfort needs and recommend the Puron system that makes sense for you.
